Austin, Texas was once referred to as the City of the Violet Crown.
The Violet Crown could refer to a few things but I like to think it’s because of the oft spectacular sunsets, which I’ve heard are helped in large part by the proximity of the Texas Hill Country.
Either way, on my way home, driving down East 7th street, I start catching some stark red hues in my rear view mirror. As I caught every single red light and pedestrian cross-walk, I started feeling sad that I left work so late in the day. I pulled into my house, grabbed my tripod and my widest lens (I normally carry my 5D with a 50mm lens all the time, but that lens is not nearly wide enough for this scene). I got to the bridge on Pleasant Valley just in time to catch the very end of the show, still spectacular but fading fast from the masterpiece of what it had been.
